“The world’s a forest, in which all lose their way; though by a different path each goes astray.” –George Villiers A staircase rising out of a small ravine along the Seven Bridges Trail in Grant Park, South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Shot in digital color, it was always my intention to create a black and white image. …… Continue reading Forest Stairs

Direction
“The mind moves in the direction of our currently dominant thoughts.” — Earl Nightingale This photograph was shot on the top floor of a parking garage near my home in Milwaukee. I was initially struck by how one of the directional arrows seemed to point to a solid concrete wall with nothing but an empty…… Continue reading Direction
The Narrow Path
“Pursue some path, however narrow and crooked, in which you can walk with love and reverence.” –Henry David Thoreau This photograph of a narrow, leaf-covered footpath was taken near my home in Milwaukee. It is along the Milwaukee River near Riverside Park. What you see here is what I saw with my eyes AND my…… Continue reading The Narrow Path
A Family Portrait
Well, the day is here. Day 365. What better way to finish a year of photos, than with a family portrait. These two are the reason I do what I do. I live for them and love them both unconditionally. Without their support, there is no way I would have ever completed this project. In…… Continue reading A Family Portrait
Fierce Calm
Long exposures of large fierce waves can produce a surprisingly ethereal and calm image. The waves you don’t see in this image were around 4-6 feet tall. Quite tall for Lake Michigan, but what you’d expect after a thunderstorm. And since this is yet another horizon shot for me, I wanted to do something different with the…… Continue reading Fierce Calm
Mixed Signals
Which way should I go? I’m getting some mixed signals. Left or right? I don’t like either direction. Hmm, perhaps I’ll just stay put in the middle for a while. Day 316 of my 365 photo a day project. I shot this image of a bike/walking path from the Frank Lloyd Wright designed Monona Terrace in Madison,…… Continue reading Mixed Signals
Going Places
“Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” –T.S. Eliot This is how I see my son quite often these days – running to and fro, exploring everything he sees. Pushing limits is built in to the DNA of a toddler. Now sometimes that can be a…… Continue reading Going Places
Soft Grass
When you take the time to really look at something, even a single blade of grass, it becomes something mysterious and awesome. Taken on a walk in a local park, I was struck by the simple charm of this patch of wild grasses. And it’s something I pass by all the time yet have never really noticed until…… Continue reading Soft Grass
The Way Out
“The best way out is always through.” –Robert Frost An important lesson I’ve learned through this photo a day project is when you are struggling to create and your muse has taken the day (or week) off, the best way to get past that block is to just keep going. You may not produce your…… Continue reading The Way Out
Ice Age Trail Near Lapham Peak
I am blessed to live so close to such a wonderful hiking trail known as the Ice Age Trail. The thousand-mile footpath highlights some of Wisconsin’s most scenic landscapes and helps tell the story of the last Ice Age by showcasing some of Wisconsin’s unique glacial features. Located entirely within the state, the trail is one…… Continue reading Ice Age Trail Near Lapham Peak
Quiet Stream
This quiet stream is at the Shalom Wildlife Sanctuary in West Bend, Wisconsin. My family and I spent the day there exploring and enjoying the quiet of a crowd-free weekday visit. The menagerie of animals included a wide variety of deer and elk, bison, a cougar, bobcats, foxes, raccoons, bear, mountain goats, emu, camels, llamas,…… Continue reading Quiet Stream
Steel Tower
This steel clad octagonal tower is the historic North Point Lighthouse. It sits on the bluffs overlooking the waters of Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s Lake Park. It stands at 74 feet and when it was in use the 25,000 candlepower lamp and Fresnel lens focused a 1,300,000 candlepower signal visible for up to 25 miles. The lighthouse…… Continue reading Steel Tower
