The Barrier

"I'm woven in a fantasy, I can't believe the things I see The path that I have chosen now has led me to a wall... ...It rises now before me, A dark and silent barrier between, All I am, and all that I would ever want to be" --from "The Wall" by Kerry Livgren and Steve Walsh The sky, a window, and a wall. Marcus Center

A high contrast minimalist black and white photograph of the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I was struck by how the backside of this building (a performing arts center), was so imposing and sort of ominous. Of course, it didn’t help that the day was cold and overcast. Taken in the…… Continue reading Marcus Center

Milwaukee Art Museum

Milwaukee Art Museum September

I spent part of Saturday at the fabulous Milwaukee Art Museum with my son.   While most of our time was spend going and up and down (and up and down) stairs and looking out the windows at the spider webs and the lake, I did have a few moments to take in some of…… Continue reading Milwaukee Art Museum

Architectural DNA

Architectural DNA

While walking to the store today, I stopped to get a shot of the side of this building.  I’m not sure if you can see it, but it looked like a giant DNA test result to me with its thin vertical windows and alternating rusty metal siding and concrete lines.  Do you think the architect had…… Continue reading Architectural DNA

Aqua Tower

Aqua Tower

The Aqua Tower in downtown Chicago is one of the most unique skyscrapers I’ve ever seen.  Looking up, the facade seems to roll and move like waves because of the irregularly-shaped concrete balconies.  Some of which jut out as much as 12 feet!  The rolling overhangs and proximity to Lake Michigan, is where the building got its name. Day…… Continue reading Aqua Tower

Two Four Six

Two Four Six

Two Four Six.  What does it mean?  Do these three numbers have any significance?  What about the wooden alphabet building blocks?  Well, actually, it is just me trying to find a shot for the day at 10 o’clock in the evening.  The blocks were handy – spread out all over the floor by my son.…… Continue reading Two Four Six

Dead End Alley

Dead End Alley

Sometimes I don’t have to go very far to find some really interesting subject matter to shoot.  Just a very short walk from my house, this very narrow dead end alley was created by a small space between two adjacent buildings.  It is blocked off on the street side with the only access through the larger alley in…… Continue reading Dead End Alley

The Window

Window

“Strange things blow in through my window on the wings of the night wind and I don’t worry about my destiny.” –Carl Sandburg Light beams through what seems to be an opening to an outside world illuminating the dark passage.  When in fact, it is a spiral staircase inside the Milwaukee Public Library in downtown Milwaukee,…… Continue reading The Window

The Milwaukee Public Library

Milwaukee Public Library

I’ve been meaning to get down to shoot at the Central location of the Milwaukee Public Library for quite a long time.  Today I finally did.   And wow!  It was mostly a scouting trip – I just brought my camera with my trusty 24-85 and shot hand-held – but a full day of shooting will be coming in…… Continue reading The Milwaukee Public Library

Wide and Narrow Lines

Wide and Narrow Lines

Details of lines and shapes on an exterior wall of a modular building at the Maryland Avenue Montessori School on the East Side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.   It was overcast today which made for very soft and even illumination.  On a walk with the family to the grocery store, we stopped to let my son…… Continue reading Wide and Narrow Lines
