Dried Tulip Blossom

I waited a bit too long to shoot this red tulip blossom. It sat on my desk and slowly dried out. And I have to say, I'm quite pleased about that. The texture and shapes of the petals in this photograph are much more interesting now than if I had shot the freshly cut flower. Happy accidents! The blossom was shot with one light slightly behind on the right at about 60 degrees from horizontal. 6 focus stacked HDR shots (3 bracketed images each). Processed in Lightroom, Photoshop, Topaz Glow and Impression, On1 Effects, and Nik Effects. Copyright 2017 Scott Norris Photography scottnorrisphotography.com

The Frame

The Frame

“Each man should frame life so that at some future hour fact and his dreaming meet.” –Victor Hugo Day 343 of my 365 photo a day project. The inspiration for this image comes from the abstract expressionist painter Agnes Martin.   Works of art by painters, writers, and musicians often serve as idea factories for me.…… Continue reading The Frame

Four Small Containers of Paint

Four Small Containers of Paint Copyright 2016 Scott Norris Photography scottnorrisphotography.com

These small containers of washable paint belong to my son.  I noticed the complementary colors when I was cleaning his painting supplies and I thought, ‘I have to shoot those!’  Of course, I dropped everything and took the plastic buckets to my camera stand.  Priorities, you know… To make the saturated colors really stand out in the…… Continue reading Four Small Containers of Paint

The Glass Tower on Downer Avenue

The Glass Tower on Downer Avenue

This concrete and glass “tower” sits on the corner of Downer Avenue and Bellview Place on the East Side of Milwaukee.  I’ve tried shooting this many times and have never really captured the shot I wanted.  But then today, after shooting it once more, I discovered one of the reasons I was not satisfied.  The…… Continue reading The Glass Tower on Downer Avenue

Paint Me a Blue Sky

Blue Sky

“Paint me a blue sky.  May the colors run true.  That I may look to the Heavens, when I search for the truth.” –Ian Moore , “Blue Sky” from his debut album. I thought with all of the craziness going on in the world today, what everyone needed was a big, bright, happy expanse of sky.…… Continue reading Paint Me a Blue Sky

Fantasy Forest

Fantasy Forest

“I’m always astonished by a forest. It makes me realise that the fantasy of nature is much larger than my own fantasy. I still have things to learn.” –Gunter Grass One of the things I’m striving to do with this photo a day project, is to experiment with new techniques,  do things I’ve never done before,…… Continue reading Fantasy Forest

Sunset at Scuppernong Springs

Sunset at Scuppernong Springs

Sunset at Scuppernong Springs in the Kettle Moraine State Forest, Southern Unit, in southeast Wisconsin.   This shot is a prime example of working with what you have and making something out of basically nothing in processing.  Taken on a small bridge over the spring fed Scuppernong River along the Scuppernong Springs Nature Trail, I…… Continue reading Sunset at Scuppernong Springs

Color and Smoke III – Dance

Color and Smoke III

“I’d rather learn from one bird how to sing than to teach ten thousand stars how not to dance” — e.e. cummings The third in a series, this is two different photographs combined into one image.  I love how the two seem to be embracing, as if dancing.   As before, the smoke was shot…… Continue reading Color and Smoke III – Dance

Think (Again)

Vintage Microphone Painted

“Everything has been thought of before, but the problem is to think of it again.” — Goethe As a photographer and artist, I’m always trying new things, new techniques, and new equipment so I can continue to improve on what I have done and perhaps create something not done before.  Or at least, create something…… Continue reading Think (Again)
