Spiral: Shape and Form

One of the reasons I decided to start a 365 Project was to simply shoot and/or process something new every day.  I’ve been doing that now for 157 days and the journey so far has been fantastic.  Something I did not think about when I started, was how the project would sharpen and expand my design and composition skills in addition to the shooting. (Heh, I’m still working on the writing part.)

Perhaps it is a by-product of feeling the pressure to create something each and every day that I feel is good enough to share with you.  But I now find myself looking at everyday objects and mundane scenery thinking about how it would look in a certain light or what would isolating it on a plain background look like or wow, I really like that texture or repeating pattern or color.  You get the picture.  It’s kind of crazy.

And that brings us to today’s image.  I saw this spiral wire spring and my first thought wasn’t “that’s cool.” or “I wonder what machine that came from?”,   it was, “I want to use it to show shape and form – two of the basic pillars of design.”  (Yep, crazy.)  Anyway, the low angle of the light highlighted the dimensional form of the spiral while the long dark shadow showcased its round shape.  I set the spring on a diagonal to create a line moving down from the top left and finally converted the image to black and white to remove distracting colors while emphasizing the texture of the white paper background.

So, it’s more of a photographic exercise than an earth-shattering piece of art.  But, hey, I like it.

Emotion. Mood. Feelings. This is what I capture through my photographs. Whether it is landscapes, architectural elements, still life, or macros - it is a very personal journey as my own fears, triumphs, beliefs, and shortcomings are exposed with each photo. In the end, it is all about telling compelling stories.
