Whether or not to speak on the current political climate—it’s a question I often ask myself. It reminds me of an old saying attributed to Buddha: “If you propose to speak, always ask yourself, is it true, is it necessary, is it kind?”
Imagine if we all applied this to all our daily interactions, not just political discussions. The world isn’t always fair, but YOU can be.
That being said, many of us feel deeply about current events and have an urge to do something about it. I hear you. I feel it too. While I won’t dive into specifics—after all, this blog is primarily about photography and art and such—I do want to share a thought.
In any discussion, no matter the topic or who it’s with, try to stick to what’s known and avoid speculation or hearsay. Be open to being wrong. Admit mistakes. Acknowledge fair points. Look for commonalities. Above all, be civil and respectful—and expect the same in return. We’ll never move past the deep divides in our society if we continue to see everything as us vs. them, tribe vs. tribe, red vs. blue—or Packers vs. Bears (OK, maybe not that one!). But seriously, the first step is recognizing what unites us. Start there, then work through the hard stuff. And if a conversation becomes unproductive or toxic, remember: you’re always free to walk away.
Thanks for reading my ramblings. I certainly don’t have all the answers, and I’m still figuring it out as I go. But I’m trying. Will you try with me?
What are your thoughts? Let’s keep the conversation going.
