Marvin the Martian

I’ve had this statuette of Marvin the Martian for a long time.  If you ever been to my office or been on a video hangout with me, you’ve this angry little guy standing on a small table over my shoulder.  He is my favorite Martian.  But I have no idea why I waited so long to shoot him for this project.  Lord knows, many folks have asked me about it.  Well, finally, the wait is over.

For this shot, I wanted to recreate the classic Hollywood portraits from the 1930s and 1940s.  Since Marvin was born (created) in 1948, I thought it was appropriate.  Using two borrowed flashes and a trigger (thanks AD!), I set a flash camera right at about 75 degrees and slightly above the subject.  I set another low and to camera left to illuminate the background a touch.

And, of course, even though Marvin is normally in full technicolor, I converted this photograph to black and white.  It wouldn’t be a classic Hollywood portrait otherwise, now would it?

Day 314 of my 365 photo a day project.

Emotion. Mood. Feelings. This is what I capture through my photographs. Whether it is landscapes, architectural elements, still life, or macros - it is a very personal journey as my own fears, triumphs, beliefs, and shortcomings are exposed with each photo. In the end, it is all about telling compelling stories.
