Ribbons and Streamers

Ribbons and Streamers

Ribbons and streamers blowing in the night breeze as fireworks explode in the sky marking the 240th birthday of the USA.

For the 4th of July, I wanted to do something different for my shot of the day.  A shot of fireworks was too obvious.  And my shots of parades and picnics did not really excite me.  So I decided to go a bit abstract.

To create this image, I tied some white, silver, blue, and red streamers to a floor fan set to full blast.  With my ISO set to 100 and my 50mm lens at f22, I set the exposure to 30 seconds and then, using a flashlight, I light painted the flowing ribbons.  With something as random as blowing streamers, it took quite a few shots to get something with the visual flow and motion I was looking for.   But I think this one came out great!  So Happy 4th of July and Happy Birthday, America!

Day 278 of my 365 photo a day project.

Emotion. Mood. Feelings. This is what I capture through my photographs. Whether it is landscapes, architectural elements, still life, or macros - it is a very personal journey as my own fears, triumphs, beliefs, and shortcomings are exposed with each photo. In the end, it is all about telling compelling stories.
