“I’m always astonished by a forest. It makes me realise that the fantasy of nature is much larger than my own fantasy. I still have things to learn.”
–Gunter Grass

One of the things I’m striving to do with this photo a day project, is to experiment with new techniques,  do things I’ve never done before, and occasionally break the “rules” of composition and design. Today is a day I break some rules.  I shot this on a clear and cloudless day and I deliberately placed the horizon extremely low in the frame cutting off all but the tops of the trees.   By cropping the image into a narrow vertical orientation and leaving a TON of negative space, I hope to create a sense of great scale.

Does the image “work”?  For the most part, that is irrelevant.  Really the only thing that matters is I’m continuing to learn while creating my own fantasies.

Day 233 of my 365 photo a day project.

Emotion. Mood. Feelings. This is what I capture through my photographs. Whether it is landscapes, architectural elements, still life, or macros - it is a very personal journey as my own fears, triumphs, beliefs, and shortcomings are exposed with each photo. In the end, it is all about telling compelling stories.
