The Wave

“You must live in the present, launch yourself on every wave, find your eternity in each moment.”
–Henry David Thoreau

“Unless you paddle for the wave, you’ll never know if you could catch it. But once you do… Ride it as long as you can. Love as long as you can.”
–Abigail Spencer

This wave of blues lines and curves is simply a macro shot of a loosely rolled cloth ribbon on a white background. My goal was to capture an etherral image with a very little in focus. That way the spotlight of the image would be abstract, like a mood or emotion, rather than a tangible object.  For the extremely narrow depth of field, I kept my f-stop on my 5omm (I also added extension tubes) at f/1.8 and moved the camera in and out and around to find interesting shapes, shadows, implied motion, and repeating patterns.

I finished the image with very minimal post-processing. Just a wide crop – 3:1 aspect ratio – and color-correction, a touch of sharpening, and the normal border patrol (spot removal).

The Wave

Emotion. Mood. Feelings. This is what I capture through my photographs. Whether it is landscapes, architectural elements, still life, or macros - it is a very personal journey as my own fears, triumphs, beliefs, and shortcomings are exposed with each photo. In the end, it is all about telling compelling stories.
